The Art of Psychedelic Hospitality: Lessons from Erica Siegal

Absolutely. Here’s a blog post recap that brings warmth, clarity, and authority to Erica’s workshop — aligned with District216’s voice and values:

The Art of Psychedelic Hospitality: Lessons from Erica Siegal

When we think about transformational events, our minds often jump to the magic moments — the breakthroughs, the music, the medicine, the community. But behind every meaningful psychedelic experience is something quieter and often overlooked: the container.

Earlier this month at The District House, we had the privilege of hosting Erica Siegal, LCSW, for a workshop that brought this truth front and center. A leader in harm reduction and a seasoned consultant for psychedelic spaces of all shapes and sizes — from underground circles to massive festivals — Erica guided us into the heart of what it means to truly hold space.

Her message was clear: You can’t do this work alone.

And if you try to? You might be putting your guests at risk.

If you’re the only sober person at your event, you’re not holding a safe container — you’re a liability.

That line hit home for many in the room.

Throughout the evening, Erica broke down the subtle and powerful ways that space-holding is an act of both planning and presence. She emphasized the importance of building support teams, staying trauma-informed, and understanding the dynamics that arise when people open themselves to altered states.

She challenged us to ask questions like:

  • Who is available if something goes wrong?

  • Does your space invite safety, or just aesthetics?

  • Are you prepared for the full spectrum of psychedelic experiences — from bliss to breakdown?

The truth is, creating a transformational space is less about decoration and more about design.

It’s a living, breathing system of relationships, agreements, and care.

And Erica has spent the past 20 years studying it.

In addition to her clinical psychotherapy work, she’s been on harm reduction teams at events like Burning Man, Lightning in a Bottle, Desert Daze, and Envision Festival. She’s the founder of NEST Harm Reduction & Consulting and SHINE Collective, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting survivors of psychedelic abuse. Her presence in our space was not just informative — it was transformative.

We’re deeply grateful to Erica for sharing her wisdom with the District216 community.
