The Visionary Muse Collective Presents Plant Allies at LoDo Studios
Walk into LoDo Studios right now and a plant looks back at you. Then another. Portraits from twenty women artists fill the walls, and each one pairs a muse with the plant ally who walks beside her. The room hums the way a garden hums, with a thousand small conversations happening at once.
This is Plant Allies, an exhibition produced by Jennifer Michelle McEuen and the Visionary Muse Collective. It opened in Santa Barbara over two unforgettable evenings, and it stays up through January 10, 2027, which gives our whole community plenty of time to sit with it.
The show carries a founding document with it. A poem by Spero, dated 2020, describes eleven muses unfurling during a potent change in the world, joined by a single divine string. Each brought her own medicine. Each lifted the others up with every brushstroke. The poem closes on the image of a medicine wheel of the female form, a circle of women serving as doulas for Mother Earth as the collective is reborn.
You can feel that intention in the gallery. The portraits speak to one another across the room, and each carries the spirit of the artist who made it. Strong minds and tender hearts show up in every frame.
Opening night brought the artists together in person for the first time. Many of them had spent months creating and connecting from afar, trading ideas, shipping paintings, and solving the thousand small problems that come with a show this size. Standing shoulder to shoulder in front of the finished wall, they shared hugs, laughter, and the particular joy of seeing a long vision become real.
The second evening turned the spotlight toward story. Artists spoke about their muses and the plant allies woven into their paintings, and the Santa Barbara community got to meet the women behind the work. Painters set up for live painting, and the whole room contributed to a collaborative piece created over the course of the night. That painting will soon go to auction, with details to come from the collective.
At District216 we believe healing and creativity grow from the same root. Plant medicine has inspired art, ceremony, and storytelling for as long as people have painted on walls, and Plant Allies brings that lineage into a contemporary Santa Barbara gallery. LoDo Studios was honored to host the exhibition, and District216 was proud to support and promote a show that celebrates women, plants, and the community that forms when both are honored.
Our members live at the crossroads of art, wellness, and consciousness, so this exhibition feels like a mirror. Walk the room, find the portrait that calls to you, and notice which plant it introduces you to.
